Top 10 Toronto Neighbourhoods

toronto neighbourhoods
Every single Toronto neighbourhood has its own set of reasons for curb appeal and it’s no secret that Torontonians are proud of their city, no matter what district they live in.

Toronto Life magazine has ranked all 140 neighbourhoods, according to the top 10 factors that their readers consider when moving. The publication collaborated with the Martin Prosperity Institute, Fildena.net, a University of Toronto think tank. Also, they worked with urbanists, economists, sociologists and information scientists to examine data like community health profiles, census data, crime figures and school evaluations to come up with the top 10 list. Therefore, other factors like housing affordability, employment, transit and diversity were also considered.

Here are the top 10 Toronto neighbourhoods, as determined by Toronto Life:

10. Leaside-Bennington

This neighbourhood ranked highest in the housing, schools, community (the number of street beautification efforts per square kilometre) and health categories. Large, affordable lots and excellent schools make it easy to see why it made the top list this year.

9. Cabbagetown-South St. James Town

Community ranked highest, with a walk score of 97.2 out of 100. Transit, health (number of health care providers per capita, and the amount of air pollution, tree coverage and green space) and schools round out the top reasons why this area is a top contender.

8. Mount Pleasant East

With a walk score of 88 and a significantly low crime rate, it’s no wonder Mount Pleasant East received the ranking it did. Community, schools, crime and employment were the top rated categories.

7. Yonge-St. Clair

Community, employment (the number of jobs and businesses per capita) and it’s low crime rate were the top three factors. Throw in a good ranking in the health category and as a result, it’s a no-brainer why Yonge-St. Clair made the list.

6. North Riverdale

This area is appealing to young families since it scores high in the employment categories and North Riverdale hosts some of the best schools in Toronto, like Holy Name Catholic School and Montcrest. Due to high scorings in entertainment and shopping give a high walk score of 90.

5. Lawrence Park North

Community, schools, health and employment were the most favourable metrics of this neighbourhood. Therefore, homes are more affordable in this area, compared to its neighbour Lawrence Park South.

4. Runnymede-Bloor West Village

Shopping is the top ranked category for Bloor-West Village. High rankings in community, health and employment give rise to this area’s fourth spot place.

3. Playter Estates-Danforth

Another area with a top walk score of 90. Also, this neighbourhood was named after George Playter, a United British Loyalist who settled near the area in 1793.  Community (score 95.8), schools (90.1), health (score 88) and shopping (score 86.6) make this one of the coveted Toronto neighbourhoods.

2. Casa Loma

Access to transit (score 93.7), a healthy population (score 95.8) and a significantly low crime rate (score 95.1) consequently, create the right mix for the second place ranking.

1. Yonge-Eglinton

Considered the best Toronto neighbourhood to live in and with good reason – because it received high scores in almost every category, with entertainment (score 94.4), employment (score 94.4) and health (score 93.7) being the top metrics.
